Young people in 22 European countries can choose from 1,100 programming events at Meet and Code for two weeks starting October 6. The events are directed to children and young people between the ages of 8 and 24. Participation is free of charge.

Number of events almost doubled

Meet and Code 2018, like last year’s initiative, will take place as part of the EU Code Week – this year from 6th to 21st of October. What has started in 2017 with 15 countries has grown to 22 countries by 2018. The number of events and cities increased by around 80 percent to 1,100 (events) and 513 (cities). Meet and Code 2018 will be available in: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom.

Meet and Code wants to show how to create the world through coding and how much fun programming can be. The events are supported by a grant of up to 500 Euro. The initiative especially supports small, locally anchored non-profit organizations in all countries. So it empowers ‘grassroots’ initiatives that enable programming and digital education for all – which is the declared aim of EU Code Week.

Large variety: From Beginner Courses to Artificial Intelligence

Simple to complex, beginner to advanced, weather station to space probe – the events at Meet and Code 2018 are so diverse. Young people can participate in courses that explain basic PC functions or how to use Word. But they can also register for workshops on simulation processes, programming or artificial intelligence.

The titles of the events reflect the whole world of technology: Lab Life: Robot Zoo, Code and Photography, Hackathon – fitbaCODE or workshops on bots writing.

Other events such as “Music from Code” as part of “Enjoy Jazz” in Heidelberg bring together robotics, electrical engineering and programming in a creative way – with electronic music as the result, also publicly performed by the young people.
