Civil Society Development Center

Sivil Toplum Geliştirme Merkezi (STGM) is an independent civil society organisation (CSO) whose mission is to support capacity building of CSOs in Turkey so they may undertake a more active role in participatory democracy.

STGM was established in 2004 by a group of opinion leaders and civil activists who were committed to civil and participatory democracy in Turkey. STGM supports rights based CSOs which focus on gender, children, human rights, youth, environment, rights of persons with disabilities, cultural rights and culture and arts. STGM’s activities include strengthening civil society networks, improving dialogue among CSOs working in different areas, and supporting advocacy and campaign activities of civil organisations. Some networks STGM has helped establish/strengthen are: Network for Refugees and Migrants, Ankara Child Rights Cooperation Platform, Autism Platform of Turkey and the Environmental Platform of Turkey (TÜRÇEP).

STGM prepares and disseminates its training materials, manuals and expert reports to CSOs but also produces publications in line with the needs of CSOs. STGM also partnered to implement Things, a peer-to-peer community across Turkey that inspires, enables and promotes technology’s role in social change through sourcing and developing solutions created by and for young people in Turkey. Things hosted a challenge to crowdsource the best web and mobile ideas for social projects and developed 7 of them during a 48-hour hackathon.

The TechSoup Türkiye donation programme launched in partnership with TechSoup and STGM in 2014.
